Cream, oatmeal and mid-gray survive the most changes of furniture. Look at the undertone rather than the name; a warm cream and a cool cream behave very differently in the same room.
Do neutral rugs show stains?
Wool resists soiling better than synthetic fiber, and a patterned neutral hides traffic better than a solid one. A pad and regular vacuuming handle most of it.
