Let the rug lead. Pull one or two of its quieter colors into pillows or a throw and keep the larger furniture calm. Trying to match everything to a bold rug usually flattens it.
Are bold rugs harder to live with?
Less than people expect. A strong pattern hides wear, pet hair and traffic far better than a solid, which is part of why they last well in busy rooms.
