A 5 by 8 is the apartment size, and the size that anchors a smaller seating group without swallowing the room.
Set it so the front legs of the sofa rest on the wool and the coffee table sits fully on it. It also works well beside or under the foot of a full or queen bed, in a home office under a desk and chair, and in a reading corner where you want warmth underfoot without committing the whole floor.
Because the scale is smaller, pattern reads differently here. A bold graphic that would dominate a 9 by 12 often sits beautifully at 5 by 8.
Every rug is made just for us from pure New Zealand wool and ships in 8 to 10 weeks. We encourage you to order a sample square first if you want to see the color and hand in your own light. Returned sample squares will gladly be credited against your future purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 5x8 rug big enough for a living room?
For a smaller room or an apartment, yes, as long as the front legs of the main seating rest on it. In a room larger than about 12 by 14, step up to an 8 by 10.
Can I use a 5x8 rug under a dining table?
We do not recommend it. Chairs need 24 inches of rug beyond the table edge to stay on when pulled back, and a 5 by 8 will not give you that on a standard table.
What size coffee table fits on a 5x8?
Most standard coffee tables sit comfortably within a 5 by 8 with the front legs of the surrounding seating on the rug edge. Tape the footprint out first if you are close.
