Case Study

When a furniture designer achieves the right balance of proportion, scale, materials and finish, the end result is a powerful statement. Side cases have a sculptural quality about them that can be grounding and comforting. I have always loved the cases Paul Evans did for his bold textures and in some instances, grand scale. Adrian Pearsall’s brutalist designs are very inspiring to me. Charlotte Perriand is another favorite and her cases seem to hold the same intellectual quality she possessed. My husband, Sherwood Hamill has been designing cases since we met over 25 years ago. I’ve enjoyed watching the evolution of his designs, his experimentation with scale and texture and have loved living with them over the years. Each one seems to have it’s own personality, all with Sherwood’s understated, thoughtful qualities. I had fun gathering up a series of some favorite designers and their casework. Enjoy— and let us know your favorites.
