HISTORY

For the past 20 years, partners in life and design, Angela Adams and furniture designer, Sherwood Hamill have cultivated a shared visual language that marries nostalgia and modernity in a way that is both grounded and quite unexpected. Since founding the renown angela adams Portland, Maine based design house in 1998, they have been dedicated to celebrating a natural lifestyle by creating well-crafted modern home furnishings. They have launched several complementary collections of furniture, area rugs and tapestries that have established them as international leaders in contemporary design. angela adams designs are known for their sense of timelessness, simplicity and balance, all inspired by the ever-changing landscape of Maine. Together, Angela and Sherwood continue to explore new mediums for their designs, creating enchanting narratives from their unique interpretation of nature.
  • 1957 Sherwood Hamill is born in Portland, Maine.
  • 1964 Sherwood travels to the New York World’s Fair with his family and is exposed to modern design.
  • 1965 Angela is born into a family of lobstermen and carpenters on North Haven, a remote island in Maine.
  • 1977 Angela’s mother, Ruthie, introduces her to the work of Louise Nevelson and Robert Indiana at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine and they travel to the mainland regularly to visit their work.
  • 1979 Sherwood studies solar design and engineering at Community College of Denver.
  • 1982 Sherwood returns to Maine from the West and gains an interest in architecture while working as a carpenter.
  • 1989 Angela graduates with a degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Philadelphia and begins work as a decorative painter and gallery manager. Sherwood’s design focus begins through furniture and cabinet making.
  • 1992 Angela and Sherwood meet and discover that the balance of their two unique perspectives make for a great partnership in life and in design.
  • 1993-1997 Angela and Sherwood develop their shared language of pattern and form—he in furniture design and she in textiles.
  • 1997 A former hardware store building in downtown Portland is purchased and renovated to become design studios. Sherwood sets up a furniture shop on the first floor and design studios are established on the second floor.
  • 1998 Together, Angela and Sherwood establish angela adams in Portland, Maine, a design house dedicated to handcrafted, modern home furnishings. The first furniture and rug collection, State of Mind, debuts at the Chicago Design Show.
  • 1999 A rug manufacturing studio is set up on the first floor of the building and for many years, nearly all of the furniture and rugs are produced there.
  • 2001 Fabrics, pillows, paper goods and other accessories are introduced.
  • 2002 The angela adams retail store in Portland, Maine opens. Handbags and totes are introduced. The Utopia Collection is launched into the angela adams Treasure line.
  • 2003 Couture tapestries are introduced into the angela adams Treasure line.
  • 2005 A fabric collection for the trade is launched in partnership with Architex. A tile collection debuts in partnership with Ann Sacks. A paper goods collection is launched with Chronicle Books.
  • 2006 A tile and broadloom carpet collection for the trade is launched with Shaw Contract Group. The trade fabric offering with Architex is expanded to include a Cubicle Curtain line and a Sustainable fabric collection. An angela adams bedding collection is launched.
